shy_childYou’re at playgroup and your wee one doesn’t want to leave your side. They're happy playing on the floor next to you, but the world can seem like a big scary place, and your side is the safest place to be!

Sometimes your child may not seem like they want to play much with other children, but that’s OK. Lots of toddlers do something called ‘Parallel Play which means they’re happy to sit next to another tot without actually playing with them. Don’t worry at this age, they’re still learning and taking everything in. Your child’s mind is like a sponge and developing fast, so no wonder things can seem a bit overwhelming at times. That’s why talking to your child can help them feel more secure.

Amazingly, by the age of 3, your child’s brain will have grown to three quarters its adult size, and the more you talk to them, the more it grows. So if they’re a bit shy now, talking to them and giving lots of attention will make them see the world through more confident eyes as they get older, and help them get on better with others.
