When the view from the carpet starts to lose its appeal, your baby might have a go at standing by holding onto the furniture and pulling themselves up. Watching them get on their toes is bound to keep you on your toes, too, as you race to stop them from tumbling backwards! But once they start getting better at staying upright, they could begin moving around the sofa, holding on tight while taking a few sideways steps.

At the standing stage, simple push-along toys will be a real hit, like a trolley full of bricks, or even a doll’s buggy - but there’s no need to spend lots of money. All they need is something to lean on, and that could even be you! Try helping them to make their first steps on their own by kneeling a short distance away and holding out your arms for them to toddle towards you – that way, if they fall, they’ll get a big hug! With a little help, soon your wee one will start to get stronger and more confident, then before you know it, you’ll be chasing them everywhere!
