The Trottick Mill Ponds were built over 200 years ago to provide water for the Claverhouse Bleach Works - a finishing mill for linen production. Water from the Dighty Burn, which runs through Trottick Local Nature Reserve, was used to power a water wheel serving the linen mill. It was also used in the cleaning and drying processes of the factory. The meadow area next to the ponds was used to dry huge sheets of material and kept short and clean for this purpose. This has meant that there are a huge variety of wild flowers present there today. The site has a wide variety of habitats including woodlands to the north of site as well as the ponds, river and meadow. This makes it excellent for wildlife watching with a wide variety of birds, bats, small mammals and minibeasts. The site is popular with walkers, families and school groups. Also Dundee's Green Circular Cycle Path runs through the reserve on its route around the city. Recently the reserve has been awarded Green Flag status, which means that it has been nationally recognised as high quality green space. Located on the Old Claverhouse Road (DD4 9BY) on the north side of Claverhouse Road, which runs from Kirkton to the Forfar Road.
